Thanks, I enjoyed it. We seem to have a similar story about “being from the outside,” except exchange visual art for music, and swap fancy degree in social sciences for fancy degree in hard sciences. I’ve worked on (unpaid) short films and tried to become a part of various music circles, including living a month in Berlin in 2018, but none of them really led anywhere on their own, much less to any kind of paid career yet. Maybe when you’re an outsider in one path, it also leads you towards being an outsider in other ones, even if part of the reason you left the first path was due to those conflicts and misalignments.

Great piece of writing and art. Nice dive into figuring out the ‘why’ behind the ‘what’.

I’m completely on board with your take on art speak. I’m as straightforward as I can be without dumbing everything down. When I write about my work, I want to connect with as many people as possible and most formal writing about art has the academy as its target audience, not anyone else. Considering the abstract lean of my work, I think it’s good to meet people at least halfway, intellectually.

Thank you so much, Tim. I always appreciate your insight.

I can’t agree with you more about meeting people where they’re at. I’d rather connect with (and perhaps inspire or educate) the average person than some critic in NYC with an overinflated opinion of self.

I like this a lot! I’m definitely part of the anti-pretentious camp of artists lol. (Maybe that’s just envy fueled by not having a million dollar idea like taping a banana to a wall. 🤷🏼‍♀️) I too share the fear of being booted from art because I don’t have an MFA—which is of course, ridiculous and impossible. Nobody can or should gatekeep anyone from making art. Not even with tape and bananas.

Do you recommend a book or article in particular to get started with art writing?

Thank you! I think you have to be famous first to attempt something like the taped banana, lol. It's not for beginners! I will try to come up with some reading suggestions but my approach has been pretty haphazard.

Thought-provoking as usual, so well- articulated. How long does it take you to craft these articles -- from idea to finished word?

Hahahaha - too long! It really varies a lot, but usually i draft and polish over 2-3 days
